01 — BEFORE DIRECT ENTRY
Foundation Year
The important question is not simply whether a Foundation exists, but where it progresses, what must be achieved and whether the full two-stage plan is realistic.
Progression may be guaranteed, conditional or competitive. Some pathways lead to one named degree; others open a wider choice only after specified grades. The written progression agreement matters more than the word Foundation.

02 — THE WHOLE DEGREE
Bachelor’s degree
A Bachelor’s choice should be tested against the whole degree, not only first-year entry: teaching format, optional placement, accreditation, duration and total cost can change the value.
Programmes with the same title can differ through a placement year, professional accreditation, assessment balance, elective freedom and final award. For career fit, these differences can matter more than the headline ranking.

03 — COURSE DEPTH
Master’s degree
At postgraduate level, course names can look similar while content and outcomes differ. Module depth, project format and previous-subject fit need close comparison.
A one-year UK Master’s compresses teaching, assessment and career preparation into a short calendar. Conversion programmes introduce a new discipline; specialist programmes assume prior depth. The right choice depends on what the curriculum expects on day one.

04 — THE EXACT CONDITION
English preparation
English preparation should solve the exact condition ahead: an accepted test, component minimums, an interview or confident academic participation.
An overall test score may still fail an offer when one component is below the minimum. A pre-sessional can sometimes replace a retest, but only when the exact institution, intake and offer accept it. Preparation should follow the condition, not a generic syllabus.
