Chevening 2027–28: the short answer

Chevening is the UK government’s fully funded scholarship for a one-year master’s degree. The 2027–28 competition is open to citizens of Chevening-eligible countries and territories; being an international applicant is not enough on its own. Applications opened on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. The online system will shut after that point, so treating the deadline as the end of the local calendar day is risky. The dates and award routes are confirmed on the official Chevening scholarships page and in the 2027–28 application timeline.

The standard package covers tuition, economy travel, the visa application fee, a monthly living allowance and several one-off allowances. Yet “fully funded” does not mean that every possible expense will be paid in every circumstance. Chevening caps its MBA tuition contribution, does not pay university deposits and does not fund the relocation or upkeep of family members. If a university does not make the expected contribution towards tuition, a candidate may be asked to take a different course or cover the shortfall. The exact 2027–28 monthly stipend had not been published in the public guidance checked for this article.

Selection is not based on academic grades alone. Applicants need 2,800 hours of experience gained after completing their undergraduate degree, persuasive evidence of leadership and professional relationship-building, a coherent choice of three courses, a realistic career plan and a commitment to return to the country of award for at least two years after the scholarship. There is no upper age limit, and already having a master’s degree does not prevent a new application.

Who can apply: Chevening eligibility for international candidates

Chevening is an international programme, but it is not open to every nationality. Citizenship of a Chevening-eligible country or territory is the first condition, and applicants must then meet every requirement attached to the relevant award route. Under the current eligibility criteria, an applicant must meet all of the core requirements:

• be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory;
• when applying for an award from an official development assistance (ODA)-eligible country, be resident in a country in that category at the time of application and show a clear intention to support the country of award; anyone living outside the country or territory connected to their award should check the individual case in the current official eligibility system rather than assume an exception;
• agree to return to the country of award for at least two years after the scholarship ends;
• hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies them for admission to a UK master’s degree;
• have completed undergraduate study at least two years before the deadline; the current work-experience page for this cycle specifically points to completion by October 2024;
• have at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after completing the undergraduate degree and accumulated over a minimum of two years;
• choose three different courses that meet Chevening’s rules and obtain an unconditional offer from at least one of them by the stated deadline.

There is no upper age limit, and a second master’s degree is permitted. An existing master’s qualification does not in itself prevent a candidate from applying, provided the university will admit them to the new course and the rest of the profile meets the rules.

Those who are ineligible include, among others, British or dual British citizens, subject to limited official exceptions; people resident in the UK when they apply; current employees, specified former employees within the two-year exclusion period and immediate relatives of employees of UK government departments, the British Council, partner UK universities or their wholly owned subsidiaries; specified British Council contractors; and people who have already studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship. The 2,800-hour rule: how Chevening counts experience in 2027

“Two years of experience” has a precise numerical meaning: at least 2,800 hours, gained after completing the undergraduate degree and spread over a minimum period of two years. This is a major reason why old articles and videos can now mislead applicants. For the 2027–28 cycle, do not include jobs or internships completed before the undergraduate completion date.

Chevening’s official work-experience guidance allows applicants to include:

• full-time employment;
• part-time employment;
• voluntary work;
• paid and unpaid internships.

The form accepts up to 15 periods of employment. The system multiplies the number of weeks by the average weekly hours and totals the entries. Periods must not be duplicated, and implausible hours invite scrutiny. The minimum must be complete before submission; experience an applicant expects to gain by the start of the master’s course does not satisfy the rule.

Before opening the form, build a personal table with the organisation, role, start and end dates, hours per week, type of work, a short description of responsibilities and a contact who could verify the period if necessary. If jobs overlap, make sure the combined schedule remains credible. Chevening looks beyond the arithmetic to the decisions, changes and results behind the experience.

Three master’s courses: selection rules and the unconditional offer

The Chevening application and university applications are two separate processes. The scholarship form requires three different master’s courses in order of preference. Applicants do not have to apply to the universities before submitting Chevening, but each institution has its own deadline. By 8 July 2027 at 17:00 British Summer Time, a successful interview candidate must upload at least one unconditional offer.

An eligible Chevening course must be:

• full-time;
• based in the UK;
• a taught master’s course rather than a research-led MRes;
• between nine and 12 months long;
• starting in the autumn, usually September or October;
• leading to a master’s degree qualification.

Distance-learning and part-time courses, PhDs and DPhils, programmes shorter than nine or longer than 12 months, and courses with more than one month of study outside the UK are not eligible. There is also a restriction on London campuses of universities based elsewhere: the same course must not be available at the main campus.

The three choices may be similar courses at three universities, or different but closely related courses at one institution. Together, they should tell a coherent academic story. A random selection of three prestigious names weakens the explanation of course choice and future impact.

An unconditional offer means that the academic, documentary and language requirements have been met. The only outstanding condition Chevening accepts for finalisation is a financial one, such as a university deposit. Course choices normally cannot be changed after the scholarship application is submitted; an exception may be considered at interview only in special circumstances. Does Chevening require IELTS?

Chevening has no IELTS requirement of its own. Its separate English-language requirement was removed in 2020, so an IELTS score is not uploaded simply to pass the scholarship selection. But “Chevening does not require English” would be a false conclusion.

Each chosen university decides how English proficiency must be demonstrated: IELTS, TOEFL, another test, previous education in English or an individual waiver. Every language condition must be cleared by the unconditional-offer deadline. Chevening’s official English-language FAQ explicitly leaves university requirements in force.

There is another critical detail. A pre-sessional English course cannot be used to meet the language condition of the course Chevening is to fund. If the university leaves such a condition on the offer, that route is not viable until the institution accepts another permitted form of evidence and issues an unconditional offer.

The Chevening application is completed in English, and the interview is also conducted in English. Even without a separate test score, candidates must formulate accurate answers themselves, explain complex professional decisions and sustain a panel conversation. How Chevening selects candidates: four criteria that must work together

Chevening is not an award for high grades alone. After the formal eligibility sift, independent readers assess applications, and the local British embassy or high commission draws up the interview shortlist. Chevening’s official application criteria centre on four connected areas.

1. Leadership and influence. Job titles are not enough. Applicants need specific situations in which they initiated change, persuaded others, solved a problem or carried an idea through to a tangible outcome. A strong example shows the context, decision, personal role, action and result.

2. Building professional relationships. Chevening looks for the ability to create and sustain working relationships, bring people together and turn collaboration into an outcome. A list of contacts or conferences does not prove this skill. The answer should show what became possible because of the relationship.

3. Course and university choice. Applicants should research all three options but focus the principal answer on their first choice. The official criteria expect a connection between previous experience, specific modules, the skills still needed and a challenge relevant both to the applicant’s country and to UK priorities: growth and prosperity, climate resilience, security and stability, and more inclusive and effective development.

4. Career plan and future impact. The plan needs short-, medium- and long-term goals that can be tested. “Become a leader and change the world” identifies neither a sector nor a problem nor the first step after returning home. A credible case answers three questions: what will change, for whom, and through which knowledge, partners and decisions.

These areas should not read like four unrelated stories. One professional direction needs to explain why the applicant can already act, which capabilities are missing, how this master’s degree closes the gap and how the result will be applied after returning home.

Building an evidence-led story without clichés or borrowed language

The best preparation begins with an inventory of evidence, not polished wording. In a private working document, list eight to 12 real situations: the initiative, difficulty, your responsibility, the people you had to involve, your decision, a quantified or observable result and what you learnt. Then distribute the material across the criteria instead of repeating one story in every answer.

For course choice, create a table of specific modules, teaching or practical elements, the missing capability and the task in which it will be used. For the career plan, identify the first role or project after returning, the next level of responsibility and the long-term change. The goals should be ambitious without losing contact with the applicant’s experience and institutional context.

Avoid universal phrases about an “international network”, “the best education” or “positive change” when they are not supported by the applicant’s own chain of cause and effect. Do not inflate a result beyond what happened. Readers and panel members see hundreds of applications; specificity, honest difficulty and a clear personal role are stronger than ceremonial language.

There is a firm boundary: Chevening explicitly prohibits using artificial intelligence to generate essay answers. The text must be the applicant’s original work; copied, plagiarised or AI-generated answers may lead to disqualification. This article therefore explains the criteria but does not provide “winning essay templates”. Even a useful example must never be presented as the applicant’s own story.

The online application and documents required at each stage

Chevening accepts applications only through its online system, reached from the country page while the application window is open. Candidates first register an email address and mobile number, complete the eligibility check and receive a unique access code. Save it: the code is needed for every subsequent login. The system ends a session after 15 minutes of inactivity, so save changes regularly.

The form covers personal and immigration details, education history, up to 15 work-experience entries, three master’s courses, details of two referees, four essays and equal-opportunities information. Once Submit application has been selected and confirmed, the essays, courses and experience cannot be changed. Limited personal-data corrections can be raised later if the candidate is invited to interview.

At initial submission, applicants need the names, job details and contact information of two referees, not the letters themselves. If invited to interview, they must upload the following no later than seven working days beforehand:

1. photographic identification—a passport or national identity card;
2. an official undergraduate degree certificate or diploma; a transcript is not accepted as a substitute;
3. two reference letters.

The referees may be two professional contacts, two academics or one of each. They must genuinely know the applicant’s work or studies and cannot be friends or relatives. The Chevening interview: what the panel assesses

The interview is a competency-based panel assessment conducted in English. The panel includes representatives of the British embassy or high commission, and answers are evaluated against global Chevening criteria. The location and format are confirmed when the interview slot is booked.

The panel returns to the facts in the submitted application: examples of leadership and collaboration, personal and professional ambitions, expected impact, Chevening’s role in the plan, the three course choices and the current status of university applications. It is not a separate performance but a test of the coherence of the story already submitted. If figures, roles or motivation now sound different from the form, trust is damaged.

Preparation should involve revisiting the applicant’s own examples, sharpening context and outcomes, researching the courses and practising concise spoken answers in English. Recording several mock interviews can reveal whether the applicant’s own role is clear without lengthy explanation and help prepare for follow-up questions. Memorising paragraphs is counterproductive: the panel is assessing judgement and evidence, not theatrical delivery.

Bring official photographic identification to the interview. Every pre-interview document must be uploaded on time; missing the reference deadline ends further consideration.
