Which universities accept the Duolingo English Test in 2027?

Short answer

Yes. The Duolingo English Test is accepted by many institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and continental Europe. According to DET itself, the test is recognised by more than 6,500 programmes — programmes, not “6,500 universities”. Acceptance can still vary by programme, faculty, study level and admission year. For a final check, Duolingo advises applicants to use its current directory of accepting institutions and the page for the exact programme. The official DET explanation of the scale of recognition does not replace a programme’s own admission rules.

In our matrix, only the University of Illinois Chicago states explicitly that it accepts DET for undergraduate applications beginning with Fall 2027 entry (Fall 2027+). Georgetown University in Qatar has a policy page for Fall 2027 applicants and says that its most competitive candidates typically score 130+, but it does not set a formal minimum. Every other threshold below was published as of 22.08.2026; some apply expressly only to 2026 or 2026–27 entry and must therefore be checked again before a 2027 application.

What “this university accepts Duolingo” really means

The phrase sounds like a universal policy, but it almost never is. You need to verify the specific application, not the university logo.

At least seven details must align:

1. Institution and campus. Georgetown in Washington, DC, and Georgetown University in Qatar are not interchangeable admission routes.
2. Study level. Undergraduate, taught or research postgraduate, doctoral and pathway programmes may all have different rules.
3. Programme or faculty. McGill’s B.Com has a different DET threshold from most of its other undergraduate programmes; at MIT, departments control the decision.
4. Intake. A rule for September 2026 does not prove that the test will be accepted in September 2027.
5. Type of score. Some institutions assess the individual skills Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking; others use the integrated subscores Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation and Production.
6. Wording of the requirement. A formal minimum, an expected score, a competitive score and a recommended score are different concepts, not synonyms.
7. How the result is submitted. A self-reported score may be enough for an initial review, but official reporting from the DET account is often required after an offer.

This is why an aggregator page or an old social-media list can only be a starting point. The final evidence is the current admission page for your programme, the conditions in your offer and, if the wording is incomplete, a written response from the admissions office.

How to read the overall score, individual skills and integrated subscores

A DET result is not a single number in isolation. The official score report contains an overall score on the 10–160 scale and a breakdown of language skills. Universities may use two different sets of scores.

Individual subscores:

• Reading;
• Writing;
• Listening;
• Speaking.

Integrated subscores:

• Literacy — combines reading and writing;
• Comprehension — combines reading and listening;
• Conversation — combines listening and speaking;
• Production — combines writing and speaking.

This is why two candidates with the same overall score of 120 may receive different admission decisions. Toronto, for example, requires 120 overall and 120 in Production. Waterloo requires 120 overall but 125 in Literacy and Production. UBC checks the individual Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking scores. Imperial, by contrast, refers explicitly to integrated subscores.

The practical rule is simple: the requirement is met only when every stated number is met. If the overall score is high enough but one compulsory subscore is lower than required, the English-language condition has not been satisfied.

Nor should one type of wording be substituted for another:

• minimum — a formal lower boundary for consideration or for satisfying the condition;
• expected — the level the institution expects in most cases;
• competitive — a benchmark for strong applicants, but not a guarantee;
• recommended — guidance that a particular department may change;
• no formal minimum — the university still evaluates the score but does not publish a pass mark.

Undergraduate, postgraduate and pathway programmes: three separate checks

Undergraduate admission

For undergraduate applications, the English-language requirement often appears on a central admissions page, but exceptions may exist at college or programme level. McGill’s general threshold of 125 does not apply to B.Ed. (TESL) or B.Com, for which 130 is published. At UCC, health programmes have higher subscore requirements. After checking the central page, always open the page for the programme itself.

For the United States, also establish whether an English-proficiency test is compulsory, recommended or waived under specified conditions. Duke, for example, recommends a test but does not require one from every applicant; Cornell requires evidence from a defined category of applicants and calls 130 its minimum competitive score. If you apply through Common App, it is useful to review the Common Application process for international students, but the language policy of the individual university still takes precedence.

Master’s and research programmes

Postgraduate policies are more often decentralised. A central page may provide a baseline, while the faculty, school or department may set a higher score, refuse DET or require additional evidence.

MIT is a clear example: the central GradAdmissions office recommends 135, but a department’s minimum takes precedence. “MIT accepts 135” is therefore inaccurate. The precise formulation is: “MIT’s central graduate admissions office describes DET and recommends 135, but acceptance of the test and the minimum score must be confirmed on the relevant department’s page.”

For research master’s degrees and doctorates, also check the graduate school, faculty and funding-body policies and, where relevant, the requirements for a teaching-assistant role. A language result sufficient for admission does not always satisfy the separate requirement for teaching.

Pathway programmes and an integrated foundation year

A pathway is a distinct admission route, not proof that direct entry is available. Birmingham published DET requirements for 2026 only for its four-year bachelor’s degree with an integrated foundation year. This does not mean the test is accepted for direct entry to every undergraduate or postgraduate programme. If your route includes a foundation year, establish:

• whether the offer specifies progression to the intended degree;
• which progression conditions apply after the foundation year;
• whether one CAS or separate stages will be used;
• whether the test is accepted for the visa process;
• whether the professional programme reached through the foundation year has additional language requirements.

The same logic applies to conditional admission, a bridge programme and pre-sessional English. The university name may be unchanged while the route into the degree is different.

A step-by-step method for checking a programme for 2027

A reliable check is not a one-tab exercise. It is a sequence.

1. Record the exact programme

Write down the full programme title, campus, faculty, study level and start date. Not “Computer Science in Canada”, but, for example, “BSc Computer Science, Vancouver campus, September 2027”.

2. Open the programme page, not only the university’s general page

Find the Entry requirements / English language requirements / International applicants section. If the programme page links to a particular requirement band or university-wide policy, open that as well.

3. Confirm that DET is named explicitly

The absence of a prohibition does not mean acceptance. You need an explicit mention of the Duolingo English Test or written confirmation from the admissions office.

4. Read exactly who the rule covers

Determine whether it applies to undergraduate, taught or research postgraduate, exchange or pathway applicants, or only to a particular faculty or school. Check medicine, law, education, nursing, speech and language therapy and other regulated subjects especially carefully.

5. Copy every number without abbreviating the rule

Create one row in your own table:

overall score — subscore type — minimum for each — one test sitting — validity — date checked.

Do not write only “DET 120” if the page also requires Production 125 or 115 in every individual skill.

6. Distinguish a formal minimum from guidance

Record the university’s exact wording: formal minimum, expected, competitive, recommended, or no formal minimum. It affects both a retake decision and a realistic assessment of your chances.

7. Check the intake and update date

Look for 2027, 2027/28, Fall 2027, September 2027 or wording that clearly covers your admission cycle. If a page, such as Warwick’s undergraduate page, mentions 2026 only, do not carry that rule forward to the next intake.

8. Establish how official results must be sent

Check the exact recipient name in your DET account, whether self-reporting is allowed at the initial-review stage and when an officially verified result is required. A separate campus or graduate school may appear as a separate recipient.

9. Check the visa rules separately

University acceptance and immigration suitability are different issues. This is critical for Australia; in the UK, the key question is how the sponsoring institution will record the English-language evidence in the CAS.

10. If anything remains ambiguous, write to admissions

Use a specific question such as:

I am applying to [exact programme] for [exact intake]. Does the programme accept the Duolingo English Test for admission? If yes, what overall and individual or integrated subscores are required, and must the result remain valid at application, offer acceptance or enrolment?

Save the answer with the page URL and the date you checked it. That is far more reliable than a verbal “yes” in a webinar that did not identify the programme.

University admission and a student visa are not the same check

A university asks: “Does this result satisfy our English-language condition for admission?” An immigration authority asks a different question: “What evidence of English is accepted for this visa category?” The answers may not match.

Australia

UWA accepts DET as evidence of its minimum English Language Competence standard for some undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programmes. However, the Australian Department of Home Affairs requires English tests for relevant visa applications to be taken at a secure test centre and expressly excludes tests conducted entirely online, with remote proctoring or at home. United Kingdom

DET is not on the list of tests provided by approved SELT organisations. For study at degree level, however, a Higher Education Provider may assess English itself at a level equivalent to CEFR B2 and may use a different test; the sponsoring institution must record the method correctly when issuing the CAS. Do not infer visa suitability merely because Imperial, Southampton or another university accepts DET for admission. Ask your sponsor in writing how satisfaction of the English-language condition will be documented for your Student visa. Ireland

Irish immigration rules contain a separate table of English-language requirements for study visas. It does not replace a university’s higher admission threshold. If a specific Trinity or UCC programme requires 120 or 130, a lower visa threshold does not reduce that programme requirement; conversely, an offer of admission does not remove the need to check acceptable visa evidence. How and when to send your results

Under the standard process, a DET result arrives within two days. But “receiving a result” and “satisfying the university condition” are not the same date. An institution may need time to match the data electronically, verify it and update the applicant portal.

Plan backwards from the deadline:

1. find the last date on which evidence of English will be accepted;
2. allow time to receive the result;
3. leave enough time for a retake if the overall score or one subscore is too low;
4. allow time for official reporting and for the result to appear in your applicant portal;
5. check whether the score must remain valid only on the application date or also on the course start date.

Send the result through your DET account and select the institution’s exact name. By default, results can be sent to up to 40 institutions. 1. Assuming a university will always accept DET

A rule may apply only to one programme and may change between admission cycles. A listing in the DET directory is a reason to investigate, not final proof.

2. Confusing 6,500+ programmes with 6,500 universities

The figure refers to programmes, not universities. It does not show how many full degree programmes will be available to you in 2027.

3. Looking only at the overall score

An overall score of 120 is not enough if Toronto requires 120 in Production, Waterloo requires 125 in Literacy and Production, and UIC requires 115 in every individual skill.

4. Confusing individual and integrated subscores

Production is not the same as Writing; Literacy is not the same as Reading. Read each subscore name literally.

5. Calling a competitive score a formal minimum

Cornell refers to a minimum competitive score, Yale to its most competitive applicants, Duke to an expected score and MIT to a recommendation. These nuances matter when assessing an application honestly.

6. Applying an undergraduate policy to a master’s degree or PhD

This is especially risky in decentralised graduate admissions systems, where a department may set its own threshold or not accept DET.

7. Confusing direct entry with a pathway

8. Using a policy from the wrong year

Warwick explicitly limits its undergraduate DET policy to September 2026 entry. That is not evidence for September 2027.

9. Treating an admission offer as sufficient visa evidence

For Australia, the online DET is not accepted as visa evidence in its own right. In the UK, you must establish the basis on which the sponsoring institution will confirm your English.

10. Taking the test immediately before the deadline

Two days for a result is not the whole application timeline. One weak subscore may make a retake necessary.

11. Sending only an unofficial file

If a university requests an official result, a screenshot or attached PDF does not replace reporting through the DET platform.

12. Failing to check validity on the relevant date

The two years run from the test date. The institution’s policy determines at which stage the result must still be valid.
