How to Become a Designer: Graphic Design or UX/UI

A practical route from choosing a role and an international programme to building strong skills and gaining initial professional experience

Choose graphic design for visual communication and UX/UI for evidence-led digital journeys. Then verify the curriculum behind every international degree title.

If you want to turn ideas into a distinctive visual language—working with typography, identity, editorial layouts, posters, packaging and campaigns—start with graphic design. If you are more interested in how people find information, move through a complex journey, understand an interface and achieve a goal in a digital product, look towards UX/UI. And if composition and behavioural research appeal to you equally, do not force yourself to choose for life: a strong grounding in visual communication can lead into UI, while an understanding of UX can make graphic decisions more purposeful.

The central mistake is choosing a profession because of the software you want to use or a word in a degree title. A designer does not simply “draw in Figma” or “make things pretty in Photoshop”. Designers establish who a solution is for, what it needs to change, which constraints apply, how the outcome can be tested and how to explain their decisions to others. Those are the questions that connect a professional goal to a bachelor’s or master’s programme overseas and should guide any decision to study design abroad.

This guide does not repeat our separate article on an admissions portfolio. Its focus is the choice between graphic design and UX/UI, the language of international degrees, the content of curricula, adjacent disciplines and the transition from education to professional practice. It is written for international applicants regardless of citizenship or country of residence; always check specific requirements against the official programme page for your application cycle.

1. The short answer: choose the type of problem, not the tool

Graphic design is the better starting point if you want to give messages a distinctive, coherent visual form: building a brand system, working with type and image, and creating consistent communication across print, screen or space. UX/UI is the more logical choice if you want to investigate user needs, design journeys, prototype interfaces, test assumptions and improve a digital experience. The difference between graphic design and UX design starts with that distinction.

UX means user experience: what a person experiences while interacting with a product or service. UI means user interface: the visual and interactive layer of that interface. In a small team, one person may cover both; in a large organisation, research, information architecture, interaction design, the visual system and content are often divided among different specialists. The title “UX/UI designer” therefore does not describe identical work everywhere.

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Am I more interested in what and how to communicate, or in how someone will complete an action?
  2. Do I want to judge an outcome by the coherence of its visual language, or by the clarity of a journey, accessibility and behavioural evidence?
  3. Would I rather spend hours refining a typographic system, or interviewing people, analysing breakdowns and revising a prototype?

If your answers split down the middle, that is not a problem. Try both kinds of project before choosing a programme, then compare your interest in the process rather than the polish of the final screen.

2. What a graphic designer actually does

A graphic designer organises text, image, colour, form and space so that a message becomes clear, appropriate and recognisable. The work might be the identity for a cultural event, wayfinding for an exhibition, a charity’s report, a packaging family, a media brand system or templates for a digital campaign. The task does not end with a single logo: designers often need to create rules that keep dozens of future applications coherent. For anyone planning a career as a graphic designer, that systems thinking matters more than isolated decoration.

The official National Careers Service graphic designer profile describes the work through briefs, ideas, drafts, imagery, wording, colour, style, layout, client presentations and subsequent updates. The US Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for graphic designers likewise emphasises visual concepts, typography, layouts, client communication and checking work before publication. It is a useful reminder that the profession combines authorship with editing, production accuracy and the ability to respond to feedback.

When assessing a graphic design degree, look beyond branding modules. A solid foundation generally includes typography, composition, photography or illustration, the history of visual culture, editorial design, data, digital media, production preparation and critical writing. The official description of the BA Graphic and Media Design at University of the Arts London, for example, should not be read as an endorsement of one university. It is a concrete illustration of how a programme can explain the relationship between graphic language, media, research and practice.

A graphic designer may work on digital products, but that does not automatically make them a UX designer. Creating an expressive screen is only one part of the problem. Someone must still know why those elements are present, what the person will see next, what happens when something goes wrong and whether people with different access needs can use the interface.

3. What a UX/UI designer actually does

A UX designer starts not with the colour of a button but with uncertainty. Who is the user? What are they trying to achieve? What prevents them from doing it? What evidence confirms that the problem exists? The answers become an information structure, a journey map, a prototype and a test plan. After testing, the design changes—sometimes radically. UX therefore requires the discipline to work from evidence rather than attachment to a first idea.

A UI designer shapes the visible and interactive system: hierarchy, grid, typography, colour, components, states, motion and rules of behaviour across screens. Good UI does not disguise weak logic; it helps people recognise available actions, understand consequences and maintain their bearings. The work often involves design systems—reusable components and rules that align the experience across a large product.

The National Careers Service UX designer profile lists working with user researchers and service designers, gathering business requirements, creating and testing prototypes, writing specifications for developers, improving designs through follow-up evidence and meeting accessibility standards. That is much more accurate than the familiar definition of “someone who draws apps”. For anyone considering a career as a UX/UI designer, the profile also shows why research, communication and iteration matter alongside visual work.

For a broader frame, the MSc Human-Computer Interaction at UCL demonstrates that education at the meeting point of people and technology may be called human-computer interaction rather than UX/UI. HCI is an interdisciplinary field where design meets psychology, computing and research. Such a programme is not merely an “advanced Figma course”, nor is it necessarily intended for someone applying straight from school. A UX design degree may therefore appear under several different labels.

It is also important to distinguish UX/UI from web development. Designers benefit from understanding technical constraints, but writing production code is a separate responsibility. Even the BLS profile groups web developers and digital designers in one overview while distinguishing the technical construction of a website from designing its appearance, functions and navigation for usability.

4. Where graphic design and UX/UI overlap—and where they diverge

Both disciplines work with hierarchy, composition, typography, colour, content and human attention. Both require understanding a brief, researching the context, proposing options, making a case, receiving critique and preparing work for real use. That is why a graphic designer can move into UI, and why a UX designer with a strong visual foundation can create more persuasive interfaces.

The difference lies in each role’s main area of responsibility. For a graphic designer, it is often a visual communication system: how a message sounds, looks and remains coherent across media. For UX, it is behaviour over time: how someone enters a journey, what they encounter next, where they hesitate, how they recover from an error and whether they achieve their goal. For UI, it is the clarity and consistency of the interactive layer.

Consider a city library service. A graphic designer might create the identity, posters, membership card, event templates and wayfinding in the building. A UX designer would investigate how people search for a book, reserve it, renew it or ask for help. A UI designer would build the catalogue’s visual system: components, states, filters, error messages and adaptations for different screens. All three contribute to one experience, but they own different layers of it.

Do not define a discipline by one artefact. A mobile screen might belong to a graphic campaign, a UI system or a UX case study. Look at the question the designer faced, the method they used and the criterion for success.

5. Graphic design or UX/UI: a comparison without the myths

The table does not impose rigid boundaries. It helps identify the professional centre of each field and clarify what you actually want to learn.

No column is “more creative”. In UX, creativity lies in framing a question and modelling a journey; in graphic design, in a precise visual response to meaning; in UI, in turning a complex system into a clear interaction. Nor is UX “scientific” while graphic design is “only artistic”: both require research, critical thinking and responsibility for consequences.

6. Run two short experiments before choosing a subject

The best test of professional interest is not an online quiz but two completed tasks given equal time. Allow ten to twelve hours for each, record the process and ask another person to challenge your decisions.

Graphic design experiment. Choose a small local event: a film screening, charity fair or book club. Define the audience and tone, gather the content, create a typographic foundation, then design a poster, a square announcement and a simple ticket. Check whether the system survives across formats, whether the date and place are legible and whether an arresting image obscures the essential message.

UX/UI experiment. Take a familiar journey with a genuine point of friction: booking a consultation, finding a class or reserving a library seat. Speak to at least three people without leading them towards your answer. Build a simple sequence of steps, make a black-and-white prototype, ask someone else to complete the task while thinking aloud and record where they stop. Add the visual layer only afterwards.

Compare the work diaries, not the final images. Where did you generate more of your own questions? Which uncertainty made you want to investigate further? In which project did criticism prompt curiosity rather than defensiveness? Which part did you avoid: shaping the form or speaking to people? These observations are more honest than an imagined future profession.

If both tasks absorbed you, look for a broad visual communication, design and media, or interaction design programme in which specialisation follows a shared foundation. If one task clearly won, you now have a criterion for reading curricula and deciding whether to study graphic design abroad or to study UX design abroad.

7. Does a designer need to draw, code and understand mathematics?

Academic drawing is not a universal entry ticket into design. In graphic design, it helps to communicate an idea quickly through a sketch and to see proportion, light, form and space, but professional value is not measured by a realistic portrait. In UX, a schematic depiction of a sequence and interaction is enough; precision of thought matters more than a beautiful line. Regular drawing still develops observation and can benefit any discipline.

Coding is not always a UX/UI designer’s responsibility, but a basic grasp of HTML, CSS, responsive behaviour, components and platform constraints improves conversations with developers. It helps distinguish difficult from impossible, anticipate states and avoid designing a screen in isolation from its behaviour. Do not, however, choose a UX programme because it has one programming module, or reject it because the word coding is absent. What matters more is whether students create and test interactive prototypes.

Mathematics enters at different levels. In visual design it appears through proportion, grids, scale and system logic; in UX through competent reading of quantitative evidence, percentages, samples and experimental results. Physical product design adds geometry, materials, measurement and manufacturing tolerances. A programme’s school-level mathematics requirement is a separate matter: check the official course page rather than inferring it from the subject title.

The most important “technical” skill for a designer is learning how to learn. Tools change faster than the principles of composition, research, accessibility and argument. Assess a course not by its present software list, but by whether it teaches methods that transfer to new environments.

8. The skills that should underpin both disciplines

The first shared foundation is communication. A designer must read a brief, identify a contradiction, articulate the problem, present work in progress and explain a decision in language understood by people outside design. A weak verbal defence often reveals that an attractive piece of work lacks a clear purpose.

The second is working with content. Typography begins with reading, while UX depends on precise wording in navigation, buttons, instructions and error messages. A designer does not have to replace an editor or UX writer, but should notice when language breaks the hierarchy or forces a user to guess.

The third is research. In graphic design, it includes the audience, cultural context, visual history, comparative field and the material properties of a medium. UX adds interviews, observation, behavioural analysis and testing. Research should not be a decorative page placed before a pre-decided answer; it should alter the direction of the work.

The fourth is iteration. Alternatives, critique and revision are not signs that the designer has failed but the normal design process. The fifth is accessibility: contrast, legibility, logical order, intelligible states and alternative ways to perceive information. The sixth is professional responsibility: copyright, the provenance of materials, participant privacy, transparent disclosure of AI and respect for the people affected by a decision.

When comparing an international design degree or another international design programme, identify where these abilities are practised and assessed. The phrase “critical thinking” in an introductory paragraph proves little; modules, briefs, criteria, the frequency of critiques and the way process is documented matter far more.

9. Tools matter, but they do not define the profession

Figma, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, Blender or another package is an environment for executing work, not an educational objective. A programme organised as a sequence of “where to click” lessons ages quickly. A course with a sound foundation, by contrast, lets students move to a new tool because they understand typography, grids, composition, colour, components, prototyping and production logic.

Graphic designers benefit from working with vector and raster graphics, multi-page layouts, print-ready files and digital publishing. In UX/UI, students should learn to make screen diagrams (wireframes), interactive prototypes, components, state variations, responsive layouts and clear specifications. But a software list does not tell you whether someone can investigate a problem, build a system and defend a decision.

Ask these specific questions about a programme:

  • Does it teach principles before tools?
  • Are there briefs without a ready-made template?
  • Does a student take work from a brief to a tested outcome?
  • Is the process assessed, or only the final presentation?
  • Do students learn to hand work to another specialist?
  • Are there policies on generative AI, authorship and sources?

A certificate from a software vendor may demonstrate familiarity with its product, but it does not replace design ability. Speed with keyboard shortcuts cannot compensate for a weak hierarchy, an untested journey or an ambiguous brief.

10. Self-directed learning, a short course or university abroad

There is more than one way to become a designer. Self-directed learning offers freedom, a low-cost entry point and a quick way to test a discipline. Its weakness is fragmentation: it is easy to study only enjoyable tools, avoid critique and miss gaps in theory. For a disciplined person, it can be a good way to test interest, but it requires a personal plan, external feedback and real briefs.

A short course is useful when its boundaries are clear: foundational typography, an introduction to UX research, prototyping or one completed project. It should not promise mastery of an entire profession in a few weeks. University makes sense when you need a longer intellectual foundation, studio culture, regular critique, access to workshops and laboratories, interdisciplinary projects, placements or a formal qualification for the next educational stage. Its value lies not in the certificate alone but in the quality of the learning environment and the continuity of study. An expensive but weak programme can still leave a student with formulaic work.

Do not ask “does a designer need a degree?” without a goal. For one entry-level role, an employer may focus first on thinking and work; a particular master’s may require a prior degree; for an international move, an academic qualification may matter administratively. Test each consequence separately rather than treating university as an abstract mark of prestige.

11. How to read BA, BFA, BDes, BSc, MA, MSc and foundation routes

A degree title is an initial clue, not a measure of quality or a complete description of content. A BA can be highly studio-intensive, a BSc can emphasise the humanities and research, and a BDes can be broad or narrowly specialised. Compare the curriculum, learning outcomes, assessment and freedom to choose modules.

In the British framework explained in the GOV.UK list of qualification levels, a foundation degree sits at Level 5, while a bachelor’s degree sits at Level 6. It is not the same as a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design or a foundation year before a bachelor’s. Other countries use other frameworks, so do not transfer the British label automatically.

International examples illustrate the range of names. The Bachelor of Design at Deakin University is an official example of a BDes, while Aalto’s programme awards a Bachelor of Arts. That is no basis for ranking one above the other. Compare the structure of each programme and establish what students actually do. When choosing a design degree abroad, look for content that fits the role you are preparing for.

12. How to assess a curriculum rather than a promotional title

Begin with the full curriculum—sometimes called a programme specification in an English-language catalogue. List every compulsory module and label its function: visual-language foundations, user research, technology, history and theory, professional practice, collaborative projects, electives, placement and final project. If UX appears in the title but research, prototyping, testing and accessibility are absent, that is a serious gap. If graphic design consists of branding and software without typography, editorial practice or context, the title is also promising more than the content.

Next, read the learning outcomes. A strong formulation describes something a graduate will be able to do: investigate, prototype, test, document, argue or collaborate. A weak one stays at the level of “unlocking creative potential”. Establish how the outcome is assessed: an individual project, teamwork, written research, a presentation, an examination or a public critique.

The official 2024–2026 curriculum for Aalto University’s Design and Media programme offers a useful model for reading. It specifies 180 ECTS, separates general, major, minor and elective studies, and describes prototyping, research, teamwork and process documentation. That does not mean the programme automatically suits everyone; it shows how specific a source should be.

Ask to see not only the most polished final projects but also a typical first- and second-year brief, assessment criteria, the feedback calendar and the conditions for using equipment. Find out whether students can change direction after a shared year or whether specialisation is fixed at admission. This is where you discover whether you can move from graphic design towards UI, interaction design or another adjacent field without restarting your education.

13. Product, interior, fashion and HCI: do not collapse adjacent fields

The word “design” covers professions with different materials, risks and testing methods. It is particularly risky to merge physical product design—the design of tangible objects—with digital product design, which often combines UX, UI, product thinking and work within a digital team.

The National Careers Service profile for product designers describes materials, production methods, 2D and 3D models, prototypes, testing, quality and safety—predominantly in a physical sense. Different official course examples show the same distinction: read the BA Product Design at University for the Creative Arts and Product Design at the University of Edinburgh through their modules and studio practice, rather than assuming they concern app design. Before choosing a product design degree, establish what its students actually design.

Similarly, the interior designer profile covers plans, materials, suppliers, estimates and project delivery, while the fashion designer profile covers technical skills, fabrics, samples and construction. 14. How to choose a country and programme without rankings

Start not with a league table, but with five practical conditions: the language of day-to-day study, the structure of the degree, the opportunity to develop your intended field, the teaching model and the viability of the complete route. Two universities offering a BA Graphic Design can differ in the amount of independent study, studio group size, access to printmaking, the role of theory, frequency of critiques and freedom to choose modules.

The UCAS Art and design subject page is a useful official discovery point for British disciplines, while the UCAS search for user experience design shows that UX can sit under several labels. The catalogue does not replace the programme page. Open the curriculum, entry requirements, portfolio policy, workshop conditions and assessment description on the institution’s own website.

Compare programmes in one consistent sheet:

  • exact degree title, level and duration;
  • compulsory modules for each year;
  • the balance of graphic, interaction, research, coding or physical making;
  • individual and team projects;
  • practice, placements or live briefs and their actual conditions;
  • facilities, access hours and additional material costs;
  • application method, language, documents and portfolio;
  • conditions for moving between fields;
  • the date on which every time-sensitive fact was checked.

15. Applying to study design abroad without duplicating the portfolio guide

Entry requirements depend on the country, level and precise course. In most cases you need to check the academic qualification, grades or subjects, evidence of the language of instruction, motivational component, reference, portfolio or creative task, interview and technical submission method. “In most cases” matters: not every design programme asks for the same package.

Official examples demonstrate the difference. As checked on 27 August 2026, the Parsons undergraduate application page distinguishes between a BFA, for which a portfolio is required, and a BBA, for which it is optional; requirements cannot be transferred between degrees. The KABK admission requirements for Bachelor Graphic Design establish a different selection process. OCAD University information for high school applicants and RISD portfolio reviews provide their own official routes and support formats. This is not a list of recommended institutions; it is evidence that there is no universal checklist.

For the British context, UAL international application advice explains its international application framework, while the Aalto admission page for Design and Media sets out a separate framework for that programme. Every deadline, language score, task format and fee must come from the current page for your cycle and be dated. We deliberately give no deadlines, fees or visa rules here because they are not universal and can change.

One principle is enough here: when preparing a design portfolio for university, make it answer the precise programme rather than an abstract idea of the design profession. The official UAL portfolio advice likewise starts with course criteria and recommends showing research, process, experimentation and development rather than only polished outcomes.

16. What a first professional design case study needs to prove

Admissions and professional portfolios have different readers. An admissions panel evaluates your potential to learn within a particular studio culture. An employer or client wants to know whether you can address a problem within real constraints, collaborate and bring work to a usable outcome. Do not send one unedited set of materials to both audiences.

In a graphic design case study, show the brief, audience, content, search for a visual language, typographic and compositional choices, alternatives, the system across media and production details. Do not add twenty identical mock-ups if they conceal the absence of a real layout. Explain why the system works in this context, not only which typefaces you used.

In a UX/UI case study, begin with the problem and the limits of your own role. Who took part in the research? Which conclusions are genuinely supported? Which assumptions remain? How did the journey change after testing? Which states, errors and accessibility needs were considered? If it is an educational project without real business data, say so. A fabricated “40% increase in conversion” destroys trust faster than a modest but honest outcome.

For team projects, name your individual contribution. For a redesign of a popular service, explain how you know the problem exists; personal frustration is not research. For AI-generated images, copy or alternatives, record the tool, the limits of its use and your own decision. As of 27 August 2026, the official Parsons undergraduate policy explicitly requires disclosure of generative AI use in relevant materials; other institutions may set different rules.

First experience does not have to be paid work for a famous company. A local initiative, student publication, cultural event, voluntary service or self-initiated project with a real audience can provide strong evidence. The important things are agreeing the brief, rights, schedule, feedback and a way to test the outcome.

17. The labour market, AI and a realistic twelve-month plan

Do not choose a field from a single salary figure or a broad prediction that “creative jobs will grow”. Role titles, statistical categories and team structures differ by country. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics profile for graphic designers projects US employment growth of 2% between 2024 and 2034, while the combined web developers and digital designers category projects 7% over the same period. These are US—not British, European or global—projections, and the second category is broader than UX/UI. They illustrate the difference between classifications; they do not predict an individual career.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, based on an employer survey, considers creative thinking alongside analytical and technological skills. That supports combining those capabilities; it does not promise demand for every role containing the word design. Generative tools accelerate alternatives, drafts and repeatable operations, but make problem framing, editorial judgement, testing, rights, accessibility and accountability even more important.

A realistic twelve-month route looks like this:

  1. Months 1–2: complete the two trial projects in section 6 and choose a working direction without declaring it a decision for life.
  2. Months 3–4: close the foundation gaps: typography and composition for everyone; research, journeys and prototyping for UX/UI; production preparation for graphic design.
  3. Months 5–6: complete one case study for a real audience and have it reviewed by at least two people outside the project.
  4. Months 7–8: build a longlist of international programmes, read their curricula and remove options without the modules you need.
  5. Months 9–10: verify academic and language requirements, the exact application format and full budget through current official sources.
  6. Months 11–12: adapt your materials to each programme, conduct a technical file check and allow time for an independent audit.

This twelve-month plan does not guarantee admission or employment. It makes the choice testable: each programme fits a role, each case demonstrates a particular ability and each time-sensitive fact has a date and primary source.

Can I become a UX/UI designer after graphic design?

Yes. Typography, composition, colour, hierarchy and visual systems provide an excellent foundation for UI. Which is better to study abroad: graphic design or UX/UI?

The better option is the process that genuinely suits you. For visual communication, look for graphic design, communication design or graphic and media design. For digital experience, look for interaction design, user experience, digital product design or HCI, reading the modules carefully. UX/UI does not appear in the title of every strong programme, and the label alone guarantees nothing.

Does a designer need a university degree?

Not for every first job, but university can provide a coherent foundation, studio culture, critique, facilities, interdisciplinary projects and a formal qualification for postgraduate study. The decision depends on your goal, budget and the quality of the specific programme. Compare what university would actually add with what you could gain from self-directed learning or a short course; do not reduce the choice to “degree or no degree”.

Do I have to be able to draw to apply for design?

No universal requirement exists. Some programmes expect observational drawing or manual experimentation; others assess a broader process, thinking and digital work. Check the criteria for the precise course. It is useful to sketch an idea quickly, but academic drawing skill is not the same as design thinking.

What is the difference between digital and industrial product design?

Digital product design generally concerns digital services and interfaces and overlaps with UX/UI. Industrial or physical product design works with tangible objects, materials, ergonomics, manufacturing, prototypes and testing. Because the same word product is used for both, always inspect modules, workshops and the kinds of work students produce.

Which design degree is better: BA, BFA, BDes or BSc?

No abbreviation is automatically superior. BA, BFA, BDes and BSc reflect the framework of a particular education system and institution, but compulsory modules, studio hours, research, technologies, assessment and freedom to specialise determine the real profile. Compare curricula line by line.

Will artificial intelligence replace graphic and UX/UI designers?

AI already automates some drafts, alternatives and production operations, but it does not assume full responsibility for the brief, context, research, rights, accessibility, testing or consequences of a decision. The risk is not one job title but an overly narrow skill set without sound judgement. Learn to frame problems, edit outputs and disclose the tools you use.

Where should I start if I have not chosen a field or country?

First complete two small projects—one in visual communication and one in UX/UI—and record which process holds your attention. Then compare programmes by modules rather than rankings, verify the requirements and only then prepare an application.
